This should come to no surprise to anybody, even the most stalwart of PC users. So you buy some company's PC. Does that give you any kind of bond or attachment to the company? No, not in the least. Do you feel any kind of obligation to say a particular brand of toaster or vaccuum cleaner? No. They're just tools. If Hamilton Beach or Oreck went out of business, BFD. You'll go buy something similar with a different name.

To you PC Windoze zombies, that's what the computer is to you: a tool. No personality. Mac users attach not only the functionality but also an identity with our Macs. I have one at home waiting for me, her name is Emily. And for you skeptic PC users out there who are asking "Why does my property need to have an identity?" well it's not too foreign a concept. It's not too much of a stretch, now, see here... will you be less apt to purchase a certain car because it's a piece of crap on wheels? because it's a girl's car? because it's too boxy? because only (insert epithet of choice here)s drive those cars? Certain consumer products you purchase and use will have a bit of your own reflection in them. This is OK. Embrace it, but try not to think about it too much.

These PC manufacturers know this. They also know that people who buy PCs and run windows won't identify at all with their machines. So why bother creating an identity? Why bother trying to take a more humanistic approach to selling a product?

Well, again, that's just it. Apple has found this niche among certain computer users; Apple knows that these people are out there. Apple therefore has cornered the market on selling a quality, reliable, easy-to-use, and fun-to-use computer. They know their consumer base. They know the high standards and expectations us Mac-o-philes set. They have to live up to them lest we stop the word-of-mouth evangelization that is the Mac culture.
